Czech Republic and Portugal to spoil Euro 2012-starved viewers

Tournament’s return from massive 48-hour hiatus to be gripping

ronaldo-euro-2012-quarters
After the UEFA schedulers had the audacity to leave us with a whole Wednesday devoid of football, Czech Republic and Portugal have a chance to make amends in the first quarter-final of Euro 2012.
To many this is the least intriguing of the four rather succulent steaks available to feast on in the last eight, but a generous side of goals would help alter that outlook, and there are several reasons to expect precisely that.
These two had the most goal-heavy group-stage games of the eight survivors, averaging three a match over the course, and their collision at the 2008 edition produced a healthy four strikes, divided neatly with two in each half.
Only three of the eight quarter-final encounters at the last two Euros breached the 2.5 goal barrier, dampening expectations that the excitement of the first round will be sustained over the next few days.
However, those three exceptions to the general trend were the ones involving these two teams as Portugal held England 2-2 at Euro 2004 (can’t remember what happened after that…) and lost 2-3 to Germany at Euro 2008, while Czech Republic eased past Denmark 3-0 at this point in Euro 2004.
So with meaty odds of 6/5 begging to be snapped up on Boylesports, The Spoiler is optimistically picking out over 2.5 goals in Warsaw as our first bet of the quarter-finals.More info you can visit http://www.free-kick.net

Dirty Tackle England’s Toni Duggan spots ice cream shop robbery after scoring vital Euro 2013 goal

(Getty)
After coming off the bench to score a 93rd-minute equalizer in England's second Euro 2013 group-stage match against Russia, 21-year-old striker Toni Duggan returned to the team's Swedish hotel and witnessed an ice cream shop robbery. And you thought you had an interesting day.
Duggan said: "I couldn't sleep because of the game and then I heard someone breaking into the ice-cream shop outside the hotel. We've got to know the owner very well, we've given him a ticket to the game and a few flags, so I phoned reception and they got the police. Crazy. The police were talking to us up at our windows and were there all night with their dogs. Hopefully they caught whoever did it."
Duggan's first goal of the tournament and what we can only imagine is her first time witnessing an ice cream shop robbery were not the only firsts of the tournament for her family, though. From the BBC: more info you can visit http://www.free-kick.net

Granada CF

Granada Club de Fútbol was founded on 14 April 1931,originally as Recreativo de Granada; the first president was Julio López Fernández. The first football match was played against Deportivo Jaén, which resulted in a 2–1 victory. The first goal in the match, and in the club’s history, was scored by Antonio Bombillar. In the 1931–32 season, the club won the Tercera Regional – Región Sur championship. After several promotions, in 1941–42 the club made its La Liga debut. From here until the ’80s, it alternated between that category and Segunda División, with its golden age coming during the ’70s, with eight top flight seasons, which included a career-best two sixth league places (1971–72, 1973–74).In 1959 Granada achieved its greatest sports landmark, being runner-up of the Copa del Generalísimo (later Copa del Rey). In the final, played at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the team lost to FC Barcelona 4–1.
In the 1980s, Granada had some brief appearances in the second division, but it spent most seasons in Segunda División B, dropping another level in 2002–03, due to non-payment to its players. After four seasons in the fourth division, former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz, along with his son Paco, arrived at the club. With their help, the Andalusian side was again promoted to the third category. In 2006–07, Granada played in Group IV of the third level after four seasons in Tercera. Three years later, in July 2009, the club was in such financial difficulty that it was on the brink of closing. The solution to the crisis came with the signing of a partnership agreement with Udinese Calcio, with the Spaniards incorporating large numbers of players contracted to the Italian club as well as receiving its youth players and reserves as part of the agreement. At the end of the season, Granada won its group then promoted in the playoffs, returning to the second division after 22 years.
In 2010–11, Granada finished in fifth position, with most of the players loaned by Udinese still on board. On 18 June 2011, the club became the first winner of the promotion playoffs – a different system was used from 1985 to 1999 – after successively defeating Celta de Vigo (1–1, penalty shootout) and Elche CF (1–1 on aggregate, away goals rule), thus returning to the top division after a 35-year absence.Back in the top-flight after such a long absence, it was always going to be difficult. By the end of the 2011–12 season, Granada managed to survive though, finishing in 17th position.See more info visit www.free-kick.netwww.free-kick.net

‘It could have an impact on the future’ – Referee who stopped play calls for greater action against racism

Gianluca Rocchi halted a match between AC Milan and Roma in May due to racist chants from the crowd, and the official hopes his example could pave the way for others in the game
The referee who stopped play between AC Milan and Roma earlier this year due to racist chants from the crowd has called for greater action to be taken against offenders.
Gianluca Rocchi stopped the match between Milan and the Giallorossi on May 12 after abusive chants from the stands were directed at Rossoneri trio Kevin-Prince Boateng, Sulley Muntari and Mario Balotelli.
The official has now been awarded with the Purple Card fair play award by Fiorentina and hopes that his actions will lead to a reduction in racially-aggravated incidents in football.
“Several times [during the match] the players asked me to suspend the game and understand their discomfort,” the 39-year-old was quoted as saying by La Repubblica.
“I knew that if there were problems, I could suspend the game. It was a small gesture that could also have an impact on the future.
“After suspending the game, I received appreciation for the gesture by both players and the leaders of both clubs.”
Rocchi then concluded by demanding stricter rules when it comes to dealing with individuals found guilty of racism in the sport, adding: “The world of football should do their best to isolate certain people.”.See more info on www.free-kick.net

Manchester City agree €27 million fee with Fiorentina for Jovetic

The Premier League runners-up concluded talks over a deal to bring the Montenegro international to England on Monday, with the forward undergoing medical tests in Florence

Manchester City have agreed a €27 million plus add-ons deal with Fiorentina for attacker Stevan Jovetic.
The 23-year-old’s agent, Fali Ramadani, is set to travel to Manchester to meet with City sporting director Txiki Begiristain in the next 24 hours, with club officials confident of completing the move following those talks.
City have agreed to a package that meets Fiorentina’s €30m (£26m) asking price, with €27m (£23.3m) set to be paid up front and a further €3m (£2.6m) to be paid in performance-related bonuses.
Jovetic visited the Fanfani Medical Centre in Florence for tests on Monday, accompanied by the Serie A side’s doctor, Jacopo Giuliattini.
City, who have sent a large group of staff to South Africa as part of their pre-season tour, also conducted similar assessments on Jesus Navas in Seville before his €21m move to the Etihad Stadium in June.
Jovetic was later followed by Mario Gomez, who is set to complete his transfer from Bayern Munich to the Florence outfit imminently.
Ramadani met with Begiristain at Mottram Hall last week to discuss terms, with City set to pay Jovetic an £80,000-a-week salary package on arrival in Manchester.
The clubs have maintained a good relationship harboured following Stefan Savic’s move from Manchester to Fiorentina last summer.
City are set for disappointment with regards to Alvaro Negredo, however, whom they had hoped to secure in a double swoop alongisde Jovetic. The Sevilla attacker is rated as having a “one per cent” chance of joining Manuel Pellegrini’s side by the Spanish club’s president, Jose Maria del Nido..See more info on www.free-kick.net
